A Victory of the Human Spirit: Tomoyuki Unno’s Inspiring Return
Football is more than just a game; it is about resilience, family, sacrifice, and the bonds that unite us across borders.
Yesterday’s match against BFF Academy was an incredibly special moment for the Paro FC family. After suffering a devastating Achilles tendon injury during last season’s Bhutan Premier League campaign, followed by surgery and nearly a year of rehabilitation, our Japanese midfield maestro and captain, Tomoyuki Unno, finally stepped back onto the pitch.
For many athletes, an Achilles injury can be career-defining. The physical recovery is demanding, but the mental battle is often even greater. Every sprint, every tackle, and every change of direction requires courage, trust, and belief in the body once again.
What made Tomo’s return even more emotional was the presence of his family. Travelling all the way from Japan to Bhutan, his parents and wife filled the stands with love and support, witnessing firsthand the culmination of a journey marked by pain, patience, and perseverance.
Behind every comeback is a team, a family, and a community. Tomo’s return was not just about football—it was a celebration of determination, gratitude, and the unwavering support that carried him through his darkest moments.
Tomo Reflects on His Return

“I’m so happy to be back.”
Reflecting on his first match back after nearly a year away, Tomo shared his emotions:
“Yesterday, I finally stepped back onto the pitch. It’s already been a year since the injury, and there were many difficult moments along the way. But my family, friends, teammates, club staff, coaches, and our President always supported me. Because of them, I was finally able to return. I’m truly happy and grateful.”
“The hesitation was always there.”
When asked about overcoming one of football’s most challenging injuries, Tomo spoke honestly about the mental side of recovery.
“This injury was very difficult because the hesitation was always there. Every time I tried to do something, that feeling remained in my mind. On the outside everything looked normal, but internally it wasn’t. Recovery meant doing the same basic rehabilitation exercises every day. It was repetitive, sometimes boring, but I kept going. Looking back now, I’m proud of myself for making it through, because it certainly wasn’t easy.”
A Family’s Presence Made It Even More Special

For Tomo, the return became even more meaningful because his loved ones were there to witness it.
“Yesterday, not only did I return to the pitch, but my family was there as well. My parents and my wife travelled all the way from Japan to watch the match. It was an emotional moment for me because I know how difficult it is to make that journey. I felt proud and grateful that they were there, and that I was able to play in front of them. I also want to thank the coaches, the club, the President, and everyone who gave me the opportunity to come back and play again.”
Looking Ahead
While his comeback marks an important milestone, Tomo believes it is only the beginning.
“This is definitely just the start. We still have a long way to go. We have the AFC Challenge League Preliminary Stage coming up in August, and we have many important league matches ahead. As captain and as a foreign player, I have a huge responsibility to lead the team. Every day I need to show quality, leadership, professionalism, and set the right example for my teammates. I will continue to give my best in every training session and every match until the very end.”
He also had a heartfelt message for the supporters who stood by him and the team throughout his recovery.
“To all our fans and supporters, thank you. Every match you come to watch, every cheer, every word of encouragement means so much to us. Your support gives us strength. We still have many important matches ahead, and together we want to achieve our goals, both in the AFC competition and in the Bhutan Premier League. Let’s fight together. Let’s go, Paro FC!”

As the final whistle blew yesterday, it felt like much more than the end of a football match. It marked the end of a difficult chapter and the beginning of a new one.
Welcome back, Tomo. Your resilience inspires us all, and the Paro FC family is proud to have you back where you belong.
“Some players return to the pitch. Others return after conquering pain, doubt, and adversity. Yesterday, Tomoyuki Unno did all three.”
